Everything you never wanted to know about me
Hello, I’m Koen, nice to meet you!
I’m 28 years old, living in the wonderful city of Ghent, Belgium. It’s so nice to see that you found my blog. I hope you like it here!
I’m a post-doctoral researcher in physics at the LumiLab research group at Ghent University. In short, I’m trying to make LED lighting cheaper, more efficient and more enjoyable.
In September 2013, I obtained my PhD in physics after four intense but very rewarding years. I studied how glow-in-the-dark materials work, and what they can be used for. One of our main achievements was the development of an orange glow-in-the-dark powder which could be used as an alternative for radioactive tracers in in vivo medical imaging.
My free time
I like books. A lot. If you want to know what I’m currently reading, check out my Goodreads account. My favourite author is Haruki Murakami, and my favourite novel is Norwegian Wood.
I like movies without a happy ending. My favourite movies are Requiem for a Dream, Donnie Darko and Amélie Poulain.
I like many different kinds of music. I have a specific interest in movie soundtracks and scores. More details on my Last.fm page.
Apparently, I’m an ISTJ-type person.
I love travelling. I have developed a curious interest for Central European countries, especially Slovakia and Croatia. I did a traineeship in Bratislava, where my Croatian roommate introduced me to his culture. I’m in love with Madrid, where I studied for six months. If anyone can get me some Kofola, I’ll be eternally grateful…
From April 2012 to September 2014 I have been actively involved in the Zonnebloemblaadjes vzw, a group of enthusiastic people organizing summer camps and activities for physically handicapped youth (age 6-18). They’re always looking for new people, so feel free to pay our website a visit!
When I’m not working, doing the dishes or ironing, I’m probably making illustrations, data visualizations or infographics. What started as a hobby attracted enough attention and support from my peers that I decided to start my own business, Baryon. Its goal is to provide graphic design services aimed at for scientists and academics, and to assist them in delivering their message in the most simple, clear and elegant way possible.
If you have a project I can help you with, or if you have some tips, advice or wisdom for me, please contact me! Shall we have lunch together?
